MONTHLY units: Millions of chained (2005) dollars; SAAR s
1. Prior to 1981 inventories of auto and home supply stores are included in motor
vehicle dealers. Beginning with 1981 these inventories are included in other durable goods.
Note. Chained (2005) dollar series for real change in private inventories are calculated as
the period-to-period change in chained-dollar end-of-period inventories. Monthly changes
in end-of-period inventories are stated at annual rates. Because the formula for the
chain-type quantity indexes uses weights of more than one period the corresponding
chained-dollar estimates are usually not additive. Monthly data in this table are underlying
detail to quarterly data in NIPA table 5.6.6A. Estimates in this table are based on the Standard
Industrial Classification (SIC).
